(New York) Naomi Osaka plans to participate in the US Open and the pre-tournament which will be held at the same location earlier in August.

Osaka agent Stuart Duguid said on Thursday that the ex-world No. 1 will compete in both tournaments which will be sanctioned by the US Tennis Association in Flushing Meadows.

However, he refused to specify the future plans of his client, who holds two career Grand Slam titles. She won the United States Open in 2018, and the Australian Open in 2019.

World first racquet Ashleigh Barty announced on Wednesday that she was withdrawing from the U.S. Open, saying she was uncomfortable traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Grand Slam tournament is scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 13.

Other players have expressed concerns about traveling to the United States, where more than 150,000 people have died from the coronavirus. Some parts of the country are also seeing dramatic increases in the number of positive cases.

Osaka was not on the list of players entered on Wednesday for the Cincinnati Masters, which is scheduled to take place Aug. 20-28 and has been relocated from Cincinnati to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, which will host the US Open. She could nevertheless obtain an invitation from the tournament organizers.

No official tournament has been presented since March because of the pandemic. The male and female professional circuits plan to relaunch their activities in August. The women's circuit is due to host a tournament next week in Palermo, Italy.
