MLS: Minnesota eliminates Columbus in shootout

(Lake Buena Vista) The United of Minnesota ended the Columbus Crew's promising adventure in the MLS revival tournament with a shootout victory on Tuesday night.

 

After both teams completed regulation time with a score of 1-1, United topped the shootout 5-3.

Goalkeeper Tyler Miller made the only save of the session against Chris Cadden by diving to his right on the Crew's third attempt.

Raheem Edwards and Chase Cooper then beat goaltender Andrew Tarbell to secure United's triumph.

 

In regulation time, the United opened the scoring with a goal from Robin Lod to the 18 th  minute.

The tying goal came in the 79 th  minute with Gyasi Zardes.

With the victory, United will face the San Jose Earthquakes in the quarter-finals on Saturday night.

The round of 16 ended Tuesday night with the game between the Portland Timbers and FC Cincinnati.

After a day off on Wednesday, the quarter-finals kick off Thursday with a showdown between the Philadelphia Union and Kansas City Sporting.
