(Rotterdam, Netherlands) The 12 aces of ABN AMRO World tournament favorite Daniil Medvedev were not enough: the Australian Open finalist was eliminated 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the first round by Dusan Lajovic.
And this is not the only surprise to come on Wednesday at the Rotterdam tournament, as third seed Alexander Zverev was also shown the exit.
Medvedev committed 25 unforced errors against 12 only by Lajovic. He also made eight double faults. The third-ranked Russian was in his first game since February 21, a three-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the Melbourne final.
Lajovic will face Borna Coric in the next round.
Alexander Bublik is responsible for eliminating Zverev, 7-5, 6-3, to set the table for a duel against Tommy Paul in the second round.
Sixth seed, David Goffin was more successful. He only needed just over an hour to knock out Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4, 6-0. He will face Jérémy Chardy, from qualifying, in the second round.
